Formula Student Bizkaia's Unforgettable Journey at Formula Student Spain 2024: Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Historic Success at the Legendary Montmeló Circuit
The Formula Student Bizkaia (FSB) team experienced an intense and emotional week at Formula Student Spain 2024 (FSS), which took place from 1 to 7 August at the legendary Montmeló circuit in Barcelona. It all started on 1 August when the team arrived by bus and plane from Bilbao. As soon as they landed, they went straight to work: registration, accreditation and setting up their workspace. This wasn't just any workshop, it was the same one used by Formula 1 teams such as Ferrari and Aston Martin during the Grand Prix - a place steeped in history! The afternoon was spent preparing the car for the rigorous technical scrutineering that was essential for the competition.
Friday 2 August was crucial as the first electrical inspection began, but things didn't go as planned. A battery problem prevented them from moving forward and had to be fixed immediately. Despite the setback, the team didn't give up and worked tirelessly.
Saturday 3rd August brought the first static presentations. The day started with the business plan, where they had to convince the judges that their project would be profitable, and they were quite pleased with the result. Next came the mechanical inspection and the Cost & Manufacturing presentation, where they explained the cost and manufacturing process of their car. The good news continued as the judges praised the team's hard work. They finished the day with the Engineering Design presentation, defending the technical foundations of their car.
Sunday 4 August was another nerve-wracking day. They passed the battery test in the morning, but the electrical test continued to be a challenge. However, the team were buoyed by the news of their excellent results in the previous day's static events. They finished 4th in the Business Plan, a historic result for FSB.
On Monday 5th August, the long-awaited dynamic events began, but only for those who had passed the inspections, which FSB managed to do that very morning. After much anticipation, they were finally able to take part in the Skidpad event, where the car showed its agility on the corners and achieved competitive times.
On Tuesday the 6th of August, they faced the Autocross event, a fast lap that was completed successfully. The traditional team photo was also taken on the track, with FSB standing out, as always, with its large group of volunteers who helped organise the event.
Finally, Wednesday the 7th of August was the moment of truth with the endurance event, the toughest of all. And they did it! They completed 20 laps of the circuit, something not all teams manage to do. Although they didn't win any trophies, they finished fourth overall in the electric car category, their best ever result at Montmeló. It was certainly a season to remember.
