Formula Student Bizkaia's Historic Triumph at Formula Student UK 2024: Achieving Unprecedented Success and Multiple Awards in Electric and Autonomous Driving Categories

From 16 to 22 July, the Formula Student Bizkaia (FSB) team competed in Formula Student UK (FSUK), one of the most prestigious engineering student competitions in the world. The FSB delegation was divided into two teams: one competing in the Electric Vehicle (EV) category and the other in the Autonomous Driving (AI) category. On 16 July, the team arrived in London and set off for the Silverstone circuit. The EV team focused on preparing their single-seater for the static events, while the AI team took part in the 'Integration Day', where they worked on integrating their autonomous driving systems with the vehicles provided by the organisers.

The competition officially began on 17 July. In the morning, the EV team dedicated their time to setting up and organising their workspace, while the Driverless (AI) team completed two of the three stages of Scrutineering required to take part in the dynamic events. This was followed by the Welcome Ceremony, which included a briefing for the teams explaining the safety guidelines.

The 18th of July was an important day for both teams. The AI team presented their first static events, which included defending the design of their autonomous system (Design AI), a presentation on real-world autonomous mobility (Real World AI), and the simulation of autonomous driving scenarios (Simulation AI). Meanwhile, the EV team progressed through the scrutineering process, successfully passing the battery and electrical safety system inspections. They also presented their business plan, outlining a business model focused on the production of their single-seater.

On 19 July, the EV team presented the remaining static events: the design of the single seater (Design EV) and the Cost & Manufacturing event. Both teams were commended for their performance in these areas. In addition, the EV team completed the final stages of Scrutineering, becoming the first electric team in the competition to pass all inspections.

The eagerly awaited dynamic events began on 20 July. The EV team took part in the Acceleration and Skidpad events and achieved the fastest acceleration time of all the competitors, marking a historic milestone for the team. However, an electrical problem prevented them from completing the Sprint event. Despite this, they were notified that they had qualified for the Cost & Manufacturing and Engineering Design finals. Meanwhile, the AI team progressed to the Trackdrive event, where their autonomous vehicle showed promising performance.

On 21 July, the EV team finally broke the streak of bad luck that had dogged them since 2008 by completing the Endurance event at FSUK for the first time. After 25 laps of the Silverstone circuit, the team finished fourth overall.

At the closing ceremony, FSB was presented with five trophies, including awards for Best EV Powertrain and Excellence in Driving Dynamics. They were also crowned Best Electric Vehicle Team of the competition, making history at the FSUK by achieving unprecedented success for the team.
